James McCrary is not a bad man, just a better animal. It’s the reason Uwe Löwe sprang him from juvenile detention and groomed him as his hunter protégé. The reason he prefers his steak extra rare. The reason executors from New York to Berlin trust him to cull unruly gargoyles. It’s no wonder, then, that in 1996 Walter Brimford calls on him to track down the most dangerous pyromancer London has ever faced and recover the most potent artifact the world has ever known.
But the pyromancer, Casey Aduro, is more than an elementalist turned traitor and he’s after more than the Eye of Vaos. From New York to Berlin there are more gargoyles and dragons than can be hidden from human eyes. There are dwarves and elves lobbying for desegregation, there are people looking for answers, and there are wicked men waiting for an opportunity.
James has the help of a 6’4” dwarf, a telepathic ecologist, and a loudmouth prince in exile, but against the gorgons, cultists, and elementalists hiding in Earth’s shadows, he has a ghost of a chance at winning. If he succeeds, he’ll finally have the means to give up the hunt forever, but is that what he wants?

I haven't read fantasy in a long time, and this novel reignited my interest in the genre. Equally fresh and classically inspired, An Infidelitous Earth expertly blends sci fi and fantasy into a story that, while fantastical, is deeply human. James McCrary is stunningly impressive as our gruff yet heroic protagonist, but I have to say, my favorite character was the damaged and sassy Faolan Ashtongue. Keeping an eye out for Brandon Smalls- hopefully his next book comes out soon, because I need more!Product details

An Infidelitous Earth eBook Brandon Smalls Reviews
Fast paced and inventive, with a prose style that reminds me a lot of Iain M. Banks.
"I'm just not sure a tall , black man with an American accent really qualifies...as subtle."
As James McCrary and his protégé / soon-to-be-BFF Robert first begin their missions to stop a pyromancer from ripping a portal between Earth and its fantasy-filled doppelganger Mythopia, author Brandon Smalls plucks his first poignant thematic string whose sound will permeate the novel's greater arc no matter what world you're on, being an outsider, especially a minority, means you're either the hunter or the hunted. McCrary refuses subtlety and playing the normal-man's game -- if there's a gargoyle to slay or a bounty to snare, McCrary attacks, unforgivingly, anyone in his path. And yet, beneath the adventure, McCrary (and the reader) has to determine whether these new immigrants to Earth pose a threat, or have we vilified the wrong side? Should Elves assimilate to the culture of the UK or be allowed to show their pointy-ears in public? Should we always be proud to hunt, or are we just opening the door for a bigger predator? Filled with rich mythos and action-packed battle sequences, AN INFIDELITOIUS EARTH creates a visual roller coaster in a familiar-yet-unfamiliar world where our hero's suffering aptly mirrors the political landscape of today, and it should become a staple of the fantasy genre of our time.
An adrenaline fueled adventure--literally, adrenaline and epinephrine are mentioned many times--this urban fantasy presents a mid-90s London beset by fantastic creatures and otherworldly people. It's a fast paced narrative that rarely stops to draw breath. The protagonist, James, a handsome Black man with superhuman powers, swaps between the present and five years in his past during a life-changing period of his growth. His past is dark and his future is bleak, but his story carries tiny glimmers of hope through his friendships, past ans present.
The narrative flow suffers frequently from random changes in character point of view. One paragraph will be from James' view, the next from his friend or even an enemy. Occasionally POV even shifts mid-paragraph or mid-sentence. This, combined with the sometimes overly-flowery and superfluous language, can make the action difficult to follow.
Some reprieve is had during quiet conversations between James and his new friend Robert, and the development of their friendship is heartwarming. At the same time the two men get to know each other, however, almost all the women in the narrative are treated rather poorly. Most are reduced to simple and highly overused tropes--the helpless damsel, the nurturer, the lover. Only one woman has even a semblance of her own place in the story, and even she develops very little when the equally important men around her are given complex backstories and interesting development. Most women in the story die to further the development of the menfolk.
While Infidelitous Earth is a magnificent adventure, it also leaves out the women of the world.
The book develops a rich and interesting universe, the rhythm of the story is sometimes overwhelming, but the main character offers relevant reflection about death and loneliness... Waiting for volume 2 !!
Buckle up. This book rips through action-packed set pieces and character exploration with virtuosic detail, unbridled relish and a dark, fresh sense of humor that makes me deeply excited to read what's next. Loved it. Need more!
Action-packed, and plays with the fantasy genre in some really interesting ways!
If you love fantasy - or even just really great character development and awesome battle scenes - you should absolutely buy this book. The author takes you on an incredible adventure, introducing you to a world of gargoyles, dwarves, hunters, ancients, and more. The worldbuilding is so imaginative and well-developed - you'll have a blast just exploring it through James' (the main character's) eyes. The book keeps you on your toes, though, with danger lurking every time you turn a page and some moments of true suspense and shock expertly woven in. I couldn't put this book down - I can only hope there are several sequels in the works!
